PIC2006

The Adventure Race

The Adventure Race Event will be for teams of two persons. There will be 3 categories for competitors i.e. men's, ladies' and mixed.
Participants can compete in one or all the races.

There will be prizes for each category, overall challenge trophy will be awarded.

Race Course and Disciplines

We figure 3 to 3 ½ hours for the winning team and 6 hours for the last team on this amazing race course. There will be 2 water stations along the race course. Participants are not allowed to carry the water bottles throughout race course i.e. must be consumed at the water station site. This is to ensure that litter is minimized on the beautiful islands.

Sea Kayaking

Sea Kayaking

The sea kayaking will make up the biggest sections of the race course. Total distance is estimated at 10 km. Teams will use two-person fiberglass kayaks and paddle along the magnificent coastline of Perhentian Island. The water is sheltered but the ability to take a good line and navigate well might be the determining factor on the sea kayaking sections.

Trail Running

Trail Running / Jungle Trekking

There will be the opportunity for a fast race here for the fleet of foot. The jungle sections will be steep and hilly on well-marked trails, making it a test of attrition for competitive teams. The trek take between 1 to 1½ hours.

Coasteering

The coasteering section is expected to take anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours to complete. Teams will have to boulder-hop or scramble around low cliffs and gigantic rocks by the edge of a amazingly clear blue sea. The rocks are clean, sun bleached and incredibly high friction so the sure-footed and courageous can move fast. That is, if they choose their path well. A bad choice of trail in the maze of boulders may lead to a dead end! This will be the section where teams who are sure-footed and agile have a distinct advantage.

On two parts of this coasteering section, teams will have to jump into the sea to swim around an impassable cliff. Participants will have to time their exit and entry with the waves so that they do not get swept on to the rocks. Lifejackets and shoes are compulsory for the swim. Gloves are recommended. The swims are no more than 200 meters long each.

Tyrolean Traverse

In the middle of the coasteering, is a tyrolean traverse that is the absolute highlight of this incredible race course. Several lines will be set between two cliffs. Participants will have to hook on to these lines and pull themselves across the 20meter high chasm as waves crash beneath. Harnesses and climbing pulleys will be provided so participants do not need to carry their own technical gear.

Snorkeling

Teams will be required to follow a navigation trail while snorkeling. It will be an opportunity to observe the marine life that has made Perhentian Island world-famous. Equipment will be provided.

Cut-off points and water stations will be available at strategic location of the Adventure Race course.
Marshals will be located at strategic positions to monitor the competitors, take their numbers and/or hand out a token to verify that they have passed the strategic points.

The following MANDATORY EQUIPMENTS are recommended:

1) Water proof casing to keep your race passport.
2) Running/Rock climbing shoes.

Final details of the Adventure Race will be made available during the final brief before the race starts.

The first Team (Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed) crossing the finishing line will be declared the Winner and the same for the second, third and so forth.
